With the public release of Google Social Statistics, part of the trial of the Google+ project, the immediate statistic that hits you is that Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is more popular than the Google co-founder, Larry Page.

This is testament to the power of social media and the popularity of Facebook, with Larry Page not getting the exposure of Zuckerberg, both in the US and here in the UK. The majority of those adding Zuckerberg as a friend don’t yet have a Google+ account, however you can still add him as a friend via Google Buzz within his profile.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the Google+ project kicks off like Facebook has, as more people will inevitably here of the Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

It looks like there’ll be a popularity contest between not just the social media entrepreneurs, but also the celebrities, similar to the Twitter race (Lady Gaga currently streets ahead).

Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten of TheNextWeb.com commented via his Google+ feed, that according to his website survey, over 2/3 of Facebook users would switch to Google+. Watch this space.
